Attn: If you've ordered this before, note that this is a new version of shao kao spice, and we now have three flavors of this BBQ blend. 

All of China loves a good skewer of grilled meat or veggie. Our line of shao kao spices features the Chinese barbecue flavors you'll find throughout Western China—from the far west region of Xinjiang, where Muslim grillers have perfected cumin-dusted lamb skewers, to the country's southwest, where Sichuan BBQ features chilies and Sichuan pepper in abundance on all manner of meat, seafood and vegetable. 

This Smoky Cumin Shao Kao Spice is the classic flavor of Xinjiang and other Northwest China provinces, where cumin is the magical match for lamb skewers, roasts and stir-fries. Leading with Xinjiang-grown cumin, it includes a moderate amount of Xinjiang ground chilies—making it our least spicy shao kao blend. It is rounded out by sesame seeds, salt, sugar, msg and spices including fennel, smoked black cardamom and star anise. 

Made for us in small batches in Chongqing, our full line of shao kao spices and their main flavors include:

  • Fragrant Hot: chili, cumin, Sichuan pepper
  • Tingly Hot: chili, Sichuan pepper (no cumin)
  • Smoky Cumin: cumin, chili (less spicy, no Sichuan pepper)
  • Shao Kao Collection: all three flavors, discounted 10%

Equally great for grilling, oven roasting and air-frying, you can use these spice blends with our recipes for Sichuan shao kao and vegetarian shao kao or anywhere else you'd use a super flavorful spice seasoning or rub.

You can even use this Smoky Cumin blend as a shortcut to a great cumin lamb or cumin beef stir-fry.
